The Miller’s House and her inhabitants :
In 1865 Victorin Parias started the flour mill Parias. The mill is situated on the port of Mortagne, Flour was shipped to the neighbouring towns on the left bank of the Gironde Estuary. Jules Parias, the son of Victorin, married Marie Croizier and they had ten children. So, in 1895, he decided to build la Maison du Meunier next to his factory. Around 1970 the mill stopped working. La Maison du Meunier was sold and the Parias family moved on. From the 70s onwards the house remained empty and slowly became derelict.
Meanwhile :
After finishing her A-levels in The Netherlands, Ariane van Tuyll spent the year 1991 in the Pyrenees as an au-pair with a family who baked organic bread. She discovered a great love for the French way of life, the language, and bread. Back in Amsterdam she studied French language and litterature at the University of Amsterdam. At the time Coen ter Kuile had his first bar next to the university. At one time, Coen had already worked in a traditional water-driven flour mill in France. The same love for France and bread still keeps us strongly intertwined. Ariane set up a theater festival in IJmuiden and Coen had two more Restaurants/Bars in The Netherlands. In October 2003 by pure luck they found the Maison du Meunier, fell in love with it, bought and restored it. The feeling and spirit of the house is an experience they would love to share with you, you are more than welcome!!
